A group of poker players based in the southern United States have banded together to support a fundraiser for a WSOP trip for David “AtomBomb” Hendrix. A GoFundMe page has been set up, hoping to raise $20,000 to pay for him to experience the world’s greatest poker festival while his health still allows.

Once in a Lifetime Trip

David Hendrix suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann disease (also known as spinal muscular atrophy type 1) and is the oldest living person in the United States with the disease. Diagnosis usually comes in the first six months of life with premature death before two years of age being the most common result.

The 31-year-old is clearly a fighter both on and off the felt. In March last year, he picked up his first live tournament win in what was only his second ever cash.

But how did it all start for him?

Pretty much the same as many of us still grinding away it seems. Back in 2004, just as the poker boom was kicking off, Hendrix picked up a copy of Doyle Brunson’s Super System Volumes 1 & 2 and life was never the same again.

“My wish changed after I turned 14 and started learning how to play poker. That wish ultimately is why I am here. I play every day at home, but I want to go to Vegas at least once in my lifetime to experience what many of my friends experience every year. If I get to go, it will be for approximately a week. That is why my goal is set to what it is for travel, etc. Whenever I am sitting at that table this wheelchair and disability do not even exist. I am in my element and I feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be. It feels like home, it honestly does.”
At the WSOP 2021, Hendrix’s friend Preston McEwen wore a hoodie with his image on during a run to 57th place in the Main Event. This year, everyone is hoping that Hendrix himself will be there to challenge for the spoils.
