Panama stop of the seventh season of Latin American Poker Tour gathered a very respectable number of entries. Across the two first day flights, players paid the buyin of $1,650 total of 550 times. Amongst these, there were numerous repeat performers, as it was an unlimited reentry event for the first six levels of each starting day. But, whether it is the same player buying in three times, or three different players buying in once each, the most important thing remains the same – the prizepool.

And the prizepool was no laughing matter, as there was just shy of $160,000 awaiting the eventual winner – a very decent prize for couple days of work. The chase started on Wednesday, but it wasn’t until Friday that the things really got serious, as the reentry period ended and every knockout meant the dream was really over.

Total of 79 players made it into the money, with Sebastian Orjuela claiming the bubble boy title. Numerous well known names were in the mix, some of them making money, like Humberto ‘The Shark’ Brenez, Nacho Barbero and Team PokerStars member Leo Fernandez who made it quite deep in the tournament, but was eventually knocked out on penultimate day, claiming 35th position.

One player at the time, the tournament was slowly approaching the final table and when Ariel Scarparro eventually fell in ninth place late on Saturday, names of the final eight players to take their seats yesterday were known. Topping that list was Fabian Ortiz, who held a slight chip lead over the second and third position players and had his mind set on claiming the second LAPT title.

His first win on the Tour came in 2009, when he successfully navigated a field of 215 players in $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Event in Vina del Mar, Chile and claimed the title together with the first place of $141,000. Yesterday it was his chance to revive those memories, a chance only seven players away.

Victories in poker tournaments sometimes come hard, with a lot of swings and frustration. For Ortiz, however, this particular final table was, for the most part, an easy game. He was able to score four knockouts on his way to the final match up, and entered heads up play with 4 to 1 advantage over Mexican Guillermo Olvera.

Olvera actually proved the biggest challenge for the Argentinean, as he was able to double up several times throughout the match. The two did strike the deal after the first double up to diminish the money gap, but still left $15,000 on the side to play for. The deal turned out to be in favor of Olvera, who, despite all of his efforts could not overpower Ortiz and eventually lost the last his chips when his Ace-Seven failed to hold against King-Seven of Ortiz.

And thus, Fabian Ortiz conquered Panama and claimed his second LAPT title – an achievement he can really be proud of. He is now standing in the good company of Nacho Barbero as one of two players with two LAPT titles to their name. The prize of $143,930 will certainly help with throwing a winner’s party as well. The last man standing on his way, Guillermo Olvera, took home six figures as well after the deal, earning $114,115.

Final Results:

1. Fabian Ortiz - $143,930*

2. Guillermo Olvera - $114,115*

3. Alexander Haber - $71,280

4. Nick Russo - $55,560

5. Hugo Suarez - $43,580

6. Javier Rios - $34,240

7. Antonio Hogaza - $25,560

8. Hugo Lemaire - $17,700
