This year’s World Series of Poker is now done in terms of preliminary events, as there are only two more tournaments running and later today the Main Event will be starting. With that in mind, our own Rikard caught up with Daniel ‘Jungleman12’ Cates who only played a few events during the summer.

Although Cates did not play much himself, it was still a stressful summer for him as he lost several big side-bets, including the one on Negreanu-Ivey combo winning the bracelet. Although he wouldn’t give an exact number, Jungleman admitted that the loss on that one was in the mid six-figure range. The other bet he mentioned was Tom Dwan vs. Limit Bot.

It was a little surprising. I thought people would be a little bit nittier, but that’s not really what happened.

The Big One for One drop went a little better. Although he was eliminated himself, Cates had a piece of this year’s winner Daniel Colman, whose victory was worth more than $15 million. As far as the play in the tournament, he says that it wasn’t much different than the usual $100k high-rollers.

Cates and Doug ‘WCGRider’ Polk had quite an altercation at the tables earlier, and Jungleman talked on that topic a bit as well. The two clearly have a somewhat complicated relationship, as they are friends of the sort and they have a history, both on and off the tables. Their disputes are less linked to the game and are more of a personal nature.

I wouldn’t play No Limit Badugi, but I would play No Limit and pretty much any game other than that vs. probably anyone, most of the time.

It seems his focus was mostly on cash games, and he says that the highest he played during the summer was $500/$1,000/$1,500 NLHE.

Although Jungleman only played five selected events during the Series, he is planning on playing the Main Event, and doesn’t have clear-cut plans for the near future, except for the visit to his family after Las Vegas.
