Unibet Open in Cannes has reached its conclusion. After four days of play, 457 players were sent to the rail, failing to escape cruel twists and turns of poker game. One was left standing as Fortune favored Daniel Smith as he will be returning home to United Kingdom €88,000 richer and with nice Unibet Open trophy.

Final day of the Cannes’ poker festival started with only seventeen players, all with their eyes on the top prize, looking to outlast the other sixteen. Dane Michael Nielsen was leading the way big time, with chip advantage of nearly one million over the second place Alain Roy of France.

To claim the victory, players would have to first make it to the final table, so the mission was two-fold – making it to top nine and then outlasting the eight. But first, other eight had to go, and that’s exactly what happened as Dominique Terzian opened the hunting season by sending Laurent Benhayoun to the rail.

He was soon followed by Redmond Toth and Antoine Bacci and the trend continued all the way until the hunter became the prey as Dominique Terzian was eliminated by Krzysztof Stuchlik in 10th place and the final table of the Unibet Open Cannes was set!

By this point, Michael Nielsen has extended his lead further, sitting with around 4 million and having more than 2 – 1 advantage over the closest competitor, Frenchman Alain Roy. As play got underway, all the stacks except for the Dane’s were quite close together and it was all about gathering chips.

In these efforts, some were bound to fall short and the first one to bite the dust was another representative of France at the final table Giuseppe Zarbo, who earned €8,800 for his efforts. He was then joined by Daniel Johansson who will be returning to Sweden €11,200 richer.

Another UK player at the table was Vinod Jadav whose race finished in 7th place as he couldn’t hold as the slight favorite against Michael Nielsen and he had to be satisfied with €14,600 prize. Nicolas Le Floch of France followed the suite and his exit in sixth ensured him the cash of €18,270.

Sole Poland representative Krzysztof Stuchlik failed to bring the highest honors for his country as he was sent to join the masses on the rail with fifth place and €22,000 prize. His pocket Ladies fell victim to the flopped straight of Davor Pavic.

Despite of taking Stuchlik’s chips, Pavic couldn’t do much with them, as he was the next to go. Fourth place finish ensured him €30,000 to take back home to Sweden. Alain Roy went soon after, leaving the chip leader to start the final table Michael Nielsen and Daniel Smith to battle it out for the trophy.

The luck that followed Nielsen for the most of the day finally ran out and he could not outlast Smith. UK player ended up amassing all chips and taking home €88,000 and Unibet Open trophy. Consolation prize for Michael Nielsen is nothing to frown upon either, as he will be leaving France with €62,000 in his pockets.

This concludes Main Event of the Unibet Open in Cannes, the tournament that, as expected, attracted a great number of players and was played out in a great atmosphere of Barriere Le Croisette Casino. Judging by the pictures and videos coming from Cannes, everybody had a good time, but winners will naturally be leaving with the nicest memories.
