No Bracelet for the Sweet(s) Lady

Just couple hours ago we were inches away from seeing the second lady bracelet winner of the Series, after Vanessa Selbst has won the very first open event of this year’s WSOP. Angela Prada-Moed squared off in the heads-up match for the WSOP title in the $1k event against Will Givens but ended up on the losing side.

Prada-Moed entered the heads-up as about 3:1 underdog and was looking to turn it around, but could never get enough going to put herself in a position of power and turn the match in her favor. Although finishing second place in an event with more than 1,800 runners is a great accomplishment in its own right, it is still hard to be stopped so close to the finish line.

This isn’t the first deep run for Prada-Moed, who also finished fourth in the 2012 WSOP Ladies Event and with last night’s finish, her WSOP winnings are in excess of $210,000. However, her poker efforts are not her only passion, as Miami – based pastry chef owns cupcakes and coffee shop in South Florida.

Angela runs the business together with her husband Michael, who is also a poker player with liver tournament winnings in excess of $110,000. Michael was certainly rooting for his wife tonight to join rather small circle of female players who have claimed a bracelet in an open event.

There are only thirteen ladies who have at least one bracelet from an open event to their name. Vanessa Selbst has three bracelets as of recently while Jennifer Harman has two (the most recent one from 2002). Annette Obrestad won the Main Event of WSOP Europe in 2007, when she was only 18 and, with winnings of nearly $4 million, certainly belongs to the circle of the most prominent female players.

Other names on this list of winners include Barbara Enright (1996), Linda Johnson (1997), Jerri Thomas (2000), Nani Dollison (2001), Cyndy Violette (2004), Kathie Liebert (2004), Annie Duke (2004), Katja Thater (2007), Loni Harwood (2013) and Dana Castaneda (2013).

Angela Prada-Moed would have, no doubt, been delighted to add her name to this list, but poker gods decided that she will have to wait for another opportunity. On the other hand, how bitter can any defeat taste when you are in a cupcake business?
