One of the stranger stories of the first couple of weeks of the 2023 World Series of Poker saw the phrase “hitting the nuts” take on a whole new meaning - a woman’s quick slap to her friend’s goolies ending the man’s deep run...
Commentator Brett Hanks caught the blow that was soon seen around Vegas:
“Was that a shot to the ... did you catch that in the background?! This guy's going down. Oh god, she just hit him right in the goods!”
“Oh, that's dirty,” added his colleague, David Tuchman.
The incident came during the $1500 6-handed NLH tournament, event #15 on the schedule, later won by Brazil’s Rafael Reis.
The footage of the low blow soon went viral and poker Twitter was quick to comment, from the shocked, to the humorous to the unimpressed:
- “Then the trash talking as he went to a knee.... damn that's cold.”
- “What did he say that was so egregious? It must have been something like ‘Hellmuth is a great cash game player’.”
- “Imagine if the roles were reversed. This is absolutely disgusting, shame on her.”
The couple in the clip, who turned out to be friends, claimed that neither could remember exactly what prompted the blow to the undercarriage.
“Maybe we drank too much, so I was probably rude!” revealed the man who sank to his knees on the rail, a marriage proposal furthest from his mind.
Did he deserve it? “Yes, of course,” claimed his friend with the quickest backhand in poker.
