The Lion’s 88ft Luxury Yacht Goes Up in Flames in the Mediterranean

Diego Gomez Gonzalez’s 88ft yacht, the Irmao, has gone up in flames off the coast of Formentera, injuring one crew member. The 34-year-old Spaniard—AKA The Lion—isn’t thought to have been on board.

Floating Inferno

Spanish coastguards were filmed towing the Italian-designed cruiser further out into the sea where the vessel later sunk. Observers said the Irmao turned into a floating inferno within minutes of a small fire taking hold.

The Consell de Formentera (city council) said the stricken vessel was owned by Gonzalez but he wasn’t seen being rescued. We do know however, that the yacht is available for charter throughout the year. €53,000 during summer and €45,000 in the off-season.

Just a single crew member was treated for minor burns, a 39-year-old Spaniard.

The Irmao was built in 1995 and featured a jacuzzi on the top deck along with a multitude of watersports equipment such as jet skis. Up to 12 guests can sleep in a VIP cabin, one double cabin and four twin cabins. There is also room for up to five crew members.

The Lion the Poker Player

The Lion got his nickname after arriving to play the final table of a major event dressed in a full-body lion costume. Gonzalez finished in 5th place at the 2012 European Poker Tour Main Event in Prague, the highlight of his live tournament career.

He learned the game from family and school friends in Madrid and progressed into the online arena where very little is known about his record. His live tournament record currently stands at $492,532.
