Over the years, there has been a lot of talk about what is the deal with Phil Hellmuth. And as time moved on, some were saying that his time is gone, while others were defending him, saying that those who speak against him don’t have even 20% of his skill. And all along, ‘Poker Brat’ didn’t really seem to care either way. I mean, sure, he cared, he whined, he complained, he talked, but his bracelets kept pilling on.

Whatever anyone may think about his play and his demeanor, how can you really deny that guy holding 13 WSOP bracelets must have pretty good idea about poker? He may play different from what many of the younger generation would consider standard and, in all fairness, some of his play probably shouldn’t work. But somehow he makes them work. What’s the deal? Who knows, but sometimes results are too good to be ignored or ascribed to luck. I mean it is possible, he could be running insanely good for his entire career, but odds for that are quite slim as well.

Year after year, Poker Brat comes back to the Series, and if he is not winning bracelets, he is coming damn far to doing it. Just two days ago, he was once again couple of good cards away from seizing his bracelet number 14, as he was playing Ted Forrest in the Seven Card Razz Event for the title. He came up just short of the bracelet, but it was his 50th WSOP final table and 101st cash. Not impressive for someone who’s been around for as long as him? Think again, as not many players come close to these results.

The funny thing here is, I’ve never been much of a Hellmuth fan myself. He always seemed overly confident about his plays even when faced with different types of evidence to the contrary. But looking at his results, maybe there is a reason. Perhaps he just knows something most people don’t and he just doesn’t want to share it?

Well, that might be getting to philosophical. But bottom line is, Phil Hellmuth is not done, not by a long shot. In all likelihood, he will be shipping both pots and bracelets for quite some time more before he even considers retiring. And, just imagine, what would happen if it wasn’t for luck?
