Online poker numbers seem to be on the decline in France, but that has not deterred leading domestic online poker network Winamax from putting itself in there. In fact, it seems to have motivated it.

Hot on the heels of its recently-signed sponsorship deal with top tier French football club Olympique de Marseille, Winamax has signed yet another sponsorship deal with yet another top tier French football side.

This time the deal is with OGC Nice, another club based in the south of the European nation.

The deal between Winamax and OGC Nice is set to last for the upcoming season of the French Ligue 1 and will see the Winamax logo embroidered on the front of the team players’ playing shorts.

Winamax’s logo will also be seen throughout the club’s Allianz Rivera stadium during its home games throughout the entire 2015-16 season, which is set to get underway next month.

The deal is strategic in that it should help further increase the reach of the Winamax brand and aligns it with a club that has a distinguished history.

While OGC Nice has not won any championships for 18 years, the club has a near-legendary status for its solid standing in the mid-20th century, which saw it win four Ligue 1 titles in eight years.

The deal will also see Winamax’s brand directly accessible to as many as 102,000 spectators every week, with the combined stadium capacities of Marseille and Nice being 105,624. Winamax’s standing as the most popular online poker operator in France will likely also be consolidated as part of the deal.

The network currently has a seven day player average of 1000, which is well above PokerStars.fr and PartyPoker.fr, which currently have an average of 700 and 425 players respectively.

It will be more interesting to see, however, whether Winamax’s sponsorship of two top tier French football clubs will give it a boost in player numbers during a time of general online poker decline in France.

Its player numbers have declined since the start of the year as part of an overall decrease in player numbers in the French online poker market.

Time will tell whether Winamax’s sponsorship of OGC Nice and Olympique de Marseille will help reverse that trend.
