"The House" a Comedic Look at Underground Casino Gambling
7 years ago19 Feb
We've heard of college kids running underground casinos to pay outrageous tuition fees, but what happens when the college kids' parents follow that same path?
We are sure to find out on June 30 with the release of "The House."
The film stars everybody's funny man, Will Ferrell, playing the hapless father alongside wife Amy Poehler, who find themselves in a dilemma when it’s time for their daughter (Ryan Simpkins) to attend college. Unfortunately, the parents have blown her college fund and must find another way meet tuition expenses.
Roll the Dice
The idea to open an underground casino is born, and from the looks of the recently released trailer of "The House," it likely won't be long before moviegoers are doubling down on the laughs. Ferrell and Poehler, of course, are alumni of "Saturday Night Live," and both have established themselves as giants in the comedy film genre since transitioning to the big screen.
The New Line Cinema production was written by Brendan O’Brien and Andrew J. Cohen, who collaborated previously on another college-themed film, "Neighbors." That release was a box office smash and it isn't difficult to imagine that the "The House" will be even more successful.
Also starring in the new film as the neighbor of Ferrell and Poehler is Jason Mantzoukas, who convinces the parents that an underground casino is the way to go for putting their daughter through college. Mantzoukas has had dozens of TV and film roles, including parts in "Sleeping with Other People", "Conception" and "Neighbors".
Lighten Up
Critics have already taken a shot at the premise of “The House,” mentioning possibilities such as a scholarship, student loans, or community college instead of running an illegal casino. But why go those routes when you can earn four years of tuition in one month with an underground casino?
Plus, pairing Ferrell and Poehler practically guarantees hilarity, a perfect recipe for some summer comedy.
