What Happened to Jason Mercier?
Here’s a look at Jason Mercier and his break with the poker world
Jason Mercier is widely considered to be one of the best all-round poker players in the world today, and has been ranked number 1 by both ESPN and Global Poker Index.
Originally from the east coast of Florida, Mercier was first introduced to poker in high school, interested in the mathematical side of the game. Mercier went on to Florida Atlantic University for one year, before attending Broward Community College for another two years to complete his Associates Degree, with the intention to pursue mathematics. However, as his success in poker began to grow, and his earning potential became evident, Mercier turned away from his studies and pursued poker full time. Mercier was first introduced to the poker world as he won the first major event that he played, the 2008 San Reno EPT for $1,372,893. Mercier continued this trend of instant success as he finished 6th at the 2008 Barcelona EPT, and taking down the High Roller Event at the European Poker Championships.
Banking over $2,000,000 in tournament winnings for 2008 made it a fantastic breakout year for Mercier. Mercier has enjoyed considerable success at the World Series of Poker, with nine final tables and two gold bracelets. Both his bracelets are Pot-Limit Omaha, as he won the $1,500 event in 2009 and the $5,000 six-handed event in 2011. Mercier has also performed well at the World Series of Poker Europe making the final table of the main event twice: 4th in 2009 and 8th in 2012.
Online, Mercier is currently a member of Team Pokerstars, which he gained after achieving the SuperNova Elite status for his high level of play on the site. While he currently plays under his real name, Mercier’s old online username ‘treysfull21’ came from his belief that pocket threes were his lucky hand, combined with 21 – his lucky number.
