Marvin Rettenmaier

After a 2012 that most pros would kill for, Marvin Rettenmaier has established himself as one of poker’s hottest young players.

After a 2012 that most pros would kill for, Marvin Rettenmaier has established himself as one of poker’s hottest young players. Born and raised in Leonberg, Germany, Rettenmaier began playing poker in high school, but it was under exceptionally strange circumstances that he got his first ‘break’.

After complaining to his doctor about chest pains, Rettenmaier went to the hospital for a standard check-up only to discover there was a problem with his heart muscle. Forced to stay in the hospital, and not allowed to play sport or drink, Rettenmaier began to dedicate more time to poker, even playing online from his hospital bed.

Rettenmaier went on to study at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel, and despite strong online poker results, decided to stay and finish his studies, though he has stated that his grades weren’t as good as they perhaps could have been because of poker.

After a succession on five-figure cashes in smaller events throughout the beginning of 2010, Rettenmaier’s first major tournament win came in the Spanish poker Tour Grande Finale, which he took down for $150,696. Rettenmaier continued to follow the European tournament circuit, producing impressive results, including a win at the France poker Series Final in Paris for $332,470, and a 3rd placed finish at the Partouche poker Tour Main Event for $66,869.

Despite these strong results, it wasn’t until 2012 that Rettenmaier began to attract the poker world’s attention. He began the year by finishing 3rd in the 8-max re-entry event at EPT Berlin for $112,169 at a tough final table that included Viktor Blom, Chris Moorman and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier. Rettenmaier would then go on to win his first World Poker Tour title at the $25,000 WPT World Championship for a $1,196,858 pay day.

Two months later Rettenmaier became the first person to win back-to-back WPT titles as he won the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic for $287,784. Rettenmaier managed to cap off a fantastic year by winning the €10,000 EPT Prague High Roller event, at a tough final table including Jason Mercier for $477,479.

With live tournament earnings exceeding $4,000,000 Rettenmaier is considered one of the world’s best tournament players, and will be looking to add a World Series of Poker bracelet to his already incredible list of achievements.
