Poker Network CEO Testing Novel Approach

A few weeks ago, an interesting thread popped up on 2 + 2 forums. The thread, started by the CEO of the Winning Poker Network, stated reasons why people should play on Americas Cardroom. The list, however, did not contain what one would expect to find in such a ‘serious’ post.

Top 10 Reasons to Play on ACR

10) We guarantee you have a stable connection to the poker site at least 50% of the time (terms and conditions apply).

9) We discourage Bum Hunting at every turn yet hired Dusty leatherass9 as our elite pro.

8) Our tournament series is called The Hi Five with $420,000 GTD (…that might explain this list).

7) We have the biggest rake race in the world (that you don’t have a shot at winning).

6) We have the $1,000,000 GTD tournament on Dec, 14th. AND The Cage! (Shameless plug…)

5) We guarantee you will receive at least 10 emails a month (if you don’t believe us check your spam folder).

4) The longest standing poker product without a Mac or mobile product. (Who needs ‘em).

3) We have more popups than all other poker networks combined.

2) We have an online store with no merchandise. (A combat point saved is a combat point earned.)

1) We are not owned by Amaya.

Reactions

The first thought that came to mind was that the WPN 2 + 2 account got hacked – the list seemed way too frivolous to be posted by a CEO of a big poker network. Those suspicions were quickly removed, however, as it was confirmed that this was just "something the CEO wanted to do."

After that idea was out of the way, posters clearly had mixed feelings about the ‘Top Ten’ list. Some expressed their concerns, especially seeing how a number of the items on the list were not that far removed from the truth. Others, however, were delighted.

W_CEO, you should post more!" Max Cut;

wasn't gonna play for few more months but the OP was amazing and i will play again in honor of that!" SIThomer;

But it wasn’t all fun and games. Opening such a thread, where you basically point out to your shortcomings, is an open invitation for players to come out with their concerns and complaints.

It would have been funny if the issues he's making a joke about haven't been going on for years. Yeah, really funny that your software crashes all the time and you refuse to fix it." iPlayPLOhigh;

In fact, as the thread moved forward, more and more unhappy customers chimed in, while the number of those expressing their appreciation for the CEO’s sense of humor rapidly declined. It was hardly an unexpected development, forcing the question as to the purpose of the thread. What was it that the CEO wanted to achieve?

Possible explanations

No such thing as bad publicity, right? Perhaps the CEO felt that even if the thread brought out complaints that would not have been voiced otherwise, the value of getting WPN some attention and publicity would justify it.

Other explanations don’t make much sense. He could have just been in a joking mood and posted the list for the ‘heck of it,' but it just doesn’t sound like something a responsible businessman would do. In all fairness, the CEO did demonstrate that he was well aware of WPN's troubles or issues. That would be a great thing, if some of those issues weren’t present for years. In this case, the CEO portrays himself as a guy who knows a lot, just doesn’t really care. Even if this is not the case, that’s how some 2 + 2 users have interpreted it.

The third explanation, which was in fact offered by some of those reading the thread, is that the end of WPN is near and it didn’t matter. This explanation is, of course, rather bleak, but it is not that hard to understand why some players would feel that way after everything that’s happened in online poker in recent years.

And finally, there is always the small possibility that it was some sort of a hack that was fixed quickly, but they figured it was better to just try and turn the situation into their advantage instead of admitting to being hacked.

While merits of this approach remain up in the air for discussion, it is an interesting idea. Perhaps some positive development updates will be coming soon in the thread. It’s been nearly three weeks since the initial post, but the CEO certainly demonstrated that he loves to surprise the customers, so there is hope.
