The male-dominated sport of poker has not always been a welcoming place for women.
Ask any female poker player and you're likely to hear any number of anecdotal accounts of insults, abuse, and sexual harassment that ladies have had to endure in poker rooms throughout the ages. While the situation has likely gotten better at present day poker tables thanks to the #MeToo movement and the like, there remains room for improvement among male players.
The fairer sex account for roughly 5% of the players competing in live poker tournaments - a number much too small for practically everyone's liking. That 5% can look to women trailblazers from poker's yesteryear who faced the hostile environment in poker rooms head-on, forging ahead to compete against men who were typically large on egos and short on sensitivity.
New Documentary
For a closer look at those pioneering women who challenged stereotypes and broke the proverbial glass ceiling to hold their own against men at the poker table, a documentary has been released called "Cracking Aces: A Woman's Place At The Table."
Produced by Tracy Halcomb and directed by H. James Gilmore for Acadia Pictures, the film is currently playing at film festivals all over America.
A release date for the public at large is not yet know. But from the looks of the trailer, the film is certainly worth watching for poker fans everywhere.
