Two robbers made off with a reported $181,200 in cash from Caesars Atlantic City early Monday morning when one of them pointed a gun at employees and the duo managed to make their getaway with two cash boxes containing the loot.
The suspects wore masks while committing the brazen heist, concealing their identities from the security cameras overhead, the Press of Atlantic City reported. The theft is being investigated by the State Police Casino Gaming Bureau, who have not furnished a wealth of details other than to confirm that the robbery took place.
The robbers apparently fled in a waiting car just after 6:00 a.m. The manhunt continues as investigators view the security tapes available, hoping to obtain information that would lead to apprehension of the thieves.
New Jersey casinos have collectively been dealt lousy hands as of late. The Atlantic Club closed in January, with Trump Plaza and the Showboat Casino scheduled to meet the same fate in coming months. The Revel Casino may also shutdown if a buyer fails to emerge following bankrupcty proceedings – the second such filing in the casino’s two years of existence.
The casino closings are the result of revenue shortfalls each year since 2006 resulting from an abundance of new casinos in neighboring states. To top it off, the Garden State’s online gambling regime has not met expectations since launching in November.
