Since 2007, the Unibet Open has been synonymous with excellent poker – not only running great tournaments, but also taking advantage of amazing locations from Prague to the Algarve. This week saw the Unibet hopefuls taking in the delights of Copenhagen, and it was Joni Liimatta from Finland who walked off with the €70,514 first prize.

A starting field capped at 450 in the Copenhagen Casino had each ponied up the €1000 to take part, although the hugely-popular online satellites accounted for many of these – including eventual 3rd place finisher, Russian Evgueny Ievkov. Ievkov was actually playing his first-ever live tournament and started the final day with the chip lead, eventually walking off with a €31,129 payday.

…which I am reliably informed by my new Finnish friend Paula Pitkänen means:

“The Copenhagen Main Event begins: the magic words: tico! tico!”

The words obviously had the right effect, as Liimatta updated his progress throughout the four days… “Day number 2, dounle the average stack. Soon the battle continues!” the talented pro tweeted.

Liimatta didn’t take long to dispose of his nearest rival, Daniel Wittikko of Sweden, heads-up – the final hand seeing the Finn improve his K 9 on the flop against the Swede’s A 9, after which he celebrated his success with his online followers…

Liimatta had only cashed for just over $13,000 prior to his Unibet success, but is now likely to test himself at the next stop when the Unibet Open visits Bucharest at the beginning of December. Last week he had tweeted…

Unibet Poker

Unibet Poker are, of course, one of the best-known poker sites on the market, and are based in Malta. Their interests go beyond poker, with sports betting, online casino games, and the additional acquisition of bingo.com rounding out an impressive gaming and gambling portfolio.
