He was the favourite to win the tournament almost from the opening day, and Jorge Moutella failed to disappoint as he reigned victorious in the Brazilian Series Of Poker (BSOP) SĂŁo Paulo Main Event.
Moutella was the eventâs chip leader after the first and second days of play, and entered the final table with the third highest chip stack â it was almost as if he was destined to win. Thatâs exactly what he did as he topped the total field of 1,659 to win the tournament and the 570 million Brazilian Reals (around US$168,780) cash prize for the first place.
14 players turned out on the final day of play, but that was quickly cut down to nine and an official final table was formed.
Maverick Melo was the first player to be eliminated from the final table after coming out second best in a hand against CauĂȘ Macedo in the tableâs opening stages.
Next to go was Pedro Villas, who would become Moutellaâs first final table scalp. It came when the eventual winner hit Trip Kings on the flop, which obliterated the short stack Villasâs Queen high to send him packing in eighth place.
Seventh place went to Pedro Correa, who was soon followed by Diogo Dill in sixth. Dill became Moutellaâs second final table scalp when Moutella hit a flush on the flop, which put Dill out of the event while further boosting the eventual winnerâs chip stack.
Moutella then claimed his second straight scalp after he knocked Luis SimĂ”es out of the Main Event in fifth spot. Once again, Moutella had Pocket Kings, which held on the board against SimĂ”esâs Ace King to put the event down to its last four players.
Amazingly, Moutella struck again soon after when he eliminated Michel Carli from the event in fourth. It came when Carli went all in after the flop with Pocket Queens and was called by the eventual winner, who had an open-ended straight draw, which he hit on the turn.
Local player CauĂȘ Macedo was then eliminated in third place by, you guessed it, Moutella, which put him and Luis âLuckeâ Santos in heads-up play.
Moutella had an unbelievable wave of momentum behind him going into heads-up, not to mention a huge chip lead, which proved to make all the difference in the final phase of the event.
In the final hand of the tournament, Moutella put Santos all-in after the turn on an Ace-3-7-4 board.
Santos called with a pair of Sevens and a Queen kicker, but that was trailing Moutellaâs Ace Seven. A Jack came on the river, which officially eliminated Santos in second place while crowning Moutella as the winner of the BSOP SĂŁo Paulo Main Event.
