The highly-anticipated 888 Super XL series kicked off and blew away the guarantees in all three events on the opening day, with ‘Mindcrushers’ taking down the $28,224 first prize against a field of over 1000 in the opening tournament of the festival.

The $5million guaranteed 12 day-long online poker fest looked like it might well have one of the 888 ambassadors taking down the first event when Chris Moorman ran deep, but the highest-earning online tournament player of all time – with over $10million in winnings – eventually had to settle for a final table spot and 9th place.

With the $80K guarantee almost doubled when 500+ rebuys added to the 1033 $109 buy-ins, it was left to ‘Mindcrushers’ and ‘clmbndream’ to duke it out heads-up – the chip lead changing hands several times before the Canadian crushed all resistance by pairing his 10 on the river.

If the opener was the big one of the day – and with more than 60 events to follow – the Mini and Turbo events actually saw their guarantees more than doubled. The $12 Mini saw ‘jobsster’ take down the $5700+ top prize, but it was in the turbo that news was made when Czech online player ’trojanmouse’ took down 5th spot to go along with his 3rd in the opener!

Ozzy-M eventually won the Turbo, but that’s only good for 4th spot in the all-important Super XL leaderboard. There’s a long way to go, but the final 18 at the end of the series will face off on two tables to determine who walks away with the ‘Champion of Champions' prize –a seat at the 2017 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas!

PokerTube will be following the best of the action throughout the 12 days of play, so be sure to check in and see whether the 888 crew of Moorman, Nitsche, Hof and Lovgren can improve on their first day’s ‘loss’ to the online regulars!
