Norwegian student Andreas Wiborg topped the field at the Unibet Open London Main Event yesterday and took down a lifetime-best score of £56,807 ($79,637) ahead of a field of more experienced players in the £990 buy-in event.

The youngster’s four previous cashes included a runner-up finish for £6640 ($8427) in the considerably smaller Main Event at the Glasgow leg of the 2016 Unibet tour to his name but this time round there would be a prizefund of £314,100 on offer and a host of Frenchmen in at the deep end, Laurent Polito the best-known of three making it to the final table - a matching trio of English players as well as New Zealand and Finland also represented.

Wiborg explained that he “checked out all the players on Hendon Mob to see if they were experienced on final tables or not” and Polito was one of those who caught his eye, although he added:

I wasn't that scared of him. When I played with him, he didn't frighten me that much” instead naming Christopher Yong as “the best on my table, he did all the right things.”

Indeed, it was Yong who made it to the final three after the French had fallen early and Wiborg’s aces took care of Kiwi Honglin Jiang

…and talk of a deal was quickly quashed by Yong, who would unfortunately for him then bust out next, leaving Wiborg to fight heads-up against Jonathan Schuman – the Englishman fresh off three cashes in January and with a 6-figure score to his name from the 2016 Estrellas UKIPT Marbella Main Event.

It was a relatively short but lively heads-up and all that separated them at the end was a cooler for Schuman who found himself all-in, but ahead and looking to take a big chiplead until…
