Do Poker Players Drink Too Much?

A recent poll found that poker players drink more than any other form of gamblers.

Poker is a mental game to a large degree and it is requires concentration and awareness.

A total of 2,131 active British gamblers answered questions about their lifestyles, physical fitness, and gambling game preferences. The results were very interesting and gave the professional poker world something to think about. A full 23% of poker players admitted to drinking in excess of recommended weekly amounts.

Man should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week, no more than four units in any one day and have at least two alcohol-free days at week. Women should drink no more than 14 units per week, no more than 3 units in any one day and have at least two alcohol-free days at week." patient.co.uk;

Despite the results of the survey, there are a lot of poker players who are living healthy lifestyles by exercising and eating right.

Dan Colman, the 24-year old poker pro who appeared under the limelight after his victory in the Big One for One Drop event earlier this year, takes fitness very seriously and abstains from alcohol. Dan was overheard speaking to poker pro Sorel Mizziabout drinking at the recent World Poker Tour Alpha 8 event in London, claiming that he doesn't know what people find interesting about alcohol and that drinking does nothing good.

Drinking too much and playing poker at the same time can lead to problems but it can also lead to winning a tournament!

There was a case of alcohol abuse during a poker tournament in 2008. Former world champion Scotty Nguyen remains in the memories of numerous fans and players for his drunken behavior at the final table of the $50k WSOP Players Championship. His insults directed toward tournament staff and other players left a bad taste in the mouth of those witnessing the event. Nguyen did win the tournament, but his victory was overshadowed by his antics. Perhaps his game was not influenced much, but his behavior most certainly was. Scotty later admitted to the fact and offered a public apology to everyone who had to endure his less-than-flattering table manners.

The recent poll put poker players at the top of the list when it comes to drinking, but it is also true that numerous poker players are taking healthy living and fitness more seriously than any other queried group. Living a healthy lifestyle leads to excellent mental health, which is very important for those playing intriguing mind games such as poker.
