The legendary Doyle Brunson may have left us this week but he had one last message for his poker Twitter fans, courtesy of his son Todd, with a typical fun “Texas Dolly” prod at Mike Matusow...

Doyle, nicknamed the Godfather of poker and perhaps the single most important figure in poker history, passed away aged 89 on May 15th, the poker world mourning news of his departure.

The unexpected tweets that appeared four days later read:

“Just cashed in my chips but before I walk out that door one last time, I just wanted to tell you all how much I loved this poker world. I didn’t want to go yet, was actually planning to play some events this summer…. But when I saw the mark up @MikeMatusow was charging for the 10k O/8 event… my heart just gave out! Be kind to one another. I’ll save you all a seat in Dolly’s game in Heaven.”

Bearing all the hallmarks of his son Todd’s sense of humour, the ‘Mike the Mouth’ tag unfortunately pointed to an old, suspended account, but word got back to Matusow quickly enough...

When the news initially broke of Doyle’s death, Matusow was among the thousands who expressed their shock and sadness, tweeting:

“Wow I can’t even make words on how much we will miss you @TexDolly! When I started my poker career I’ll never forget some advice you gave me! God was gracious to have had you enter lives of so many in the poker world! #ripdoyle.”

Matusow then ran a tribute podcast, revealing that although health issues meant he hadn’t been so close to the elder statesman in recent years, he was still close to his son, Todd.

There is certain to be a tribute to Doyle Brunson at this year’s World Series of Poker, “Texas Dolly” winning 10 career gold bracelets including back-to-back Main Event titles in 1976 and 1977.
