It proved to be a very Merry Christmas and looks set to be a Happy New year for Belgium’s Jorden Verbraeken after he took down the German Poker Tour Main Event at Kings Casino for €34,718 in a 4-way deal.

The €270 buy-in event was the highlight of the GPT tour’s stop just across the border in the Czech republic, Europe’s biggest cardroom hosting many of the continent’s season finale’s and the Main Event attracted a total of 1048 players including 183 re-entries between them boosting the prizefund considerably in the €200k guaranteed tournament – up to €268,812.

Four days of frantic play saw the numbers whittled down, but one man still standing come the final table was the ‘local hero’ Yehuda Cohen aka ‘Chikitta Banaana’ who just happens to own a massage parlour across the street from the casino and who has had considerable success in his very local cardroom – narrowly missing out on a WSOP Circuit bracelet two years ago.

With €50k up top, there was a strong German contingent in the big money, although for some reason not a single one of the four who made the final  nine was going by their real name, Banaana joined by TrAiAcHtSeKsA, VERITAS and FUZZY in a commentators nightmare, only the Austrian, Belgian, Slovakian and French hopefuls sticking to their real names.

Regardless, by the time the table had fought their way down to just four, talk of a deal began and the shortest-stack Cohen was more than happy to add almost €10k to the advertised 4th spot payout, his fellow players also deciding discretion was the better part of valour – and Verbraeken happy to take a hit for the title and bragging rights.

Verbraeken had finished second earlier in the week in a PLO event, but his Main Event victory vied with his previous biggest cash and brought his earnings clearly over the $100k milestone – a sweet way to celebrate the festive season.
