Casinos in Las Vegas have always been a tempting target for thieves and criminals of all persuasions, but for 6 months some of the biggest name properties in the gambling Mecca have been losing to an alleged 44-year old thief armed only with a box truck, a clipboard and a fake ID lanyard…

Armed robberies, sophisticated scams and all manner of criminal behaviour are a routine part of a casino’s security worries, but Danny Roy Salazar is alleged to have bypassed the lucrative cash and chips on offer on the casino floor, opting instead to wander through restricted areas and steal everyday casino and hotel items.

The Rio, Westgate and Caesars Palace casinos were all targeted by Salazar, claim police, the brazen robber helping himself to ‘mattresses, televisions, “prototype auto electronics,” beauty products, furniture, light fixtures, an iPad and a photo booth’, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

“The suspect’s modus operandi is to drive onto a hotel property in the box truck and gain access into restricted employee doorways and hallways,” said the police report, Salazar facing "six counts each of burglary and grand larceny of property worth more than $3,500".

Other casinos hit by similar thefts include Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Hotel, prosecutors declining to charge Salazar with several more similar counts.

Police finally caught their suspect after a chase involving the reportedly stolen truck he was driving, an $86,000 Isuzu, the van flipping and rolling before police detained Salazar, the alleged thief telling police: “You already got it all figured out”, when questioned about the stolen truck and casino thefts.

A security analyst told the Review Journal:

“If you know the language, know the lingo and look like you can belong, you can belong,” said Douglas Florence.

Salazar was remanded in the Clark County Detention Center on $120,000 bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for next Wednesday.
