A Brief History of the World Series of Poker
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) was conceived by a group of Texans in Reno, led by Tom Moore, who organised the Texas Gambling Reunion in 1969.Benny Binion, a Texas magnate, was among the attendees, and he later launched the first WSOP at Binion's Horseshoe in Downtown Las Vegas in 1970.
The inaugural WSOP was actually not a tournament but a series of cash games, featuring various variants such as 2-7, razz, 5 and 7-Card Stud, and Texas hold'em. At the end of the series, the players voted Johnny Moss as the champion.
In 1971, the first official WSOP Main Event took place, featuring a NL hold'em tournament. Johnny Moss won again, becoming the first official Main Event champion. The WSOP Main Event then experienced steady growth while hosted at Binion's Horseshoe Casino every year, expanding from a few players to hundreds by the end of the millennium.
As Las Vegas grew, the WSOP moved from Binion's Horseshoe to the Rio Hotel and Casino in 2005, after Harrah's (now Caesar's Entertainment) purchased the Horseshoe and retained the WSOP rights.
The new venue provided more space for the increasing number of participants arriving to stake their claim for glory after Chris Moneymaker's 2003 WSOP Main Event win, which set off the poker boom.
In 2022, the WSOP then moved to Paris Las Vegas and Bally's Las Vegas, two connected casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, offering more dining and accommodation options with a better quality of everything overall. The series was successful, and the event will remain at this location for the foreseeable future with even more tables being added for this year.
