Poker players from the Czech Republic are making names for themselves this year and Lukas Zaskodny added himself to the list by winning Event #6 at the World Series of Poker Europe, claiming the prize of €93,677.
Playing on his home turf at Kings Casino in Rozvadov was likely a factor in Zaskodny topping the field of 191 entries in the €2,200 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament. The last man in his way was Allen 'Chainsaw' Kessler, who again fell short in acquiring that elusive gold bracelet despite almost five dozen cashes in WSOP events.
"It’s an amazing feeling," Zaskodny told WSOP reporters after accepting the treasured bling. "I’m happy that my friends could be here with me."
Czech Success
Zaskodny's victory followed that of fellow Czech Martin Kabrhel in Event #3 at the WSOPE just days ago, a €1,100 super turbo bounty for €53,557. Over the summer in Las Vegas, it was Artur Rudziankov who made Czechs everywhere proud by winning Event #58 at the WSOP, giving the country three winners in 2017.
"There are a lot of really good poker players in the Czech Republic," Zaskodny said. "I think you will hear of more in the future."
Three-handed play that included Krasimir Yankov lasted about five hours before the Bulgarian hit the rail. The first hand of heads-up action saw chipleader Kessler hit a flush on the river, but Zaskodny topped that by connecting on a full house.
That left an exasperated Chainsaw short-stacked, but he got buzzing again and managed to double up. Play continued for another hour before the final hand that saw Kessler all-in and ever-hopeful with a deuces full of jacks boat. But Zaskodny's hand was better with jacks full, shutting down the Chainsaw.
An amateur who plays poker "quite regularly," Zaskodny imports electronics as his main source of income. He can now include a gold bracelet among those shipped items.
