It is perfectly fine to be suspicious about upcoming movies featuring topics of gambling and/or poker because, let’s be honest, most of them thus far have been a little disappointing. Perhaps the new comedy-drama Mississippi Grind starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn will be more successful on the big screen?

The movie, written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, tells a story about a gambler called Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) who decides to hit the road and travel from town to town visiting numerous casinos in order to change his luck. Gerry teams up with a young and charismatic nomad poker player named Curtis (Ryan Reynolds) who joins him on the journey but, unlike Gerry’s reason to win life-changing money and pay off his debts, Curtis’ reason for going on the journey is quite mysterious and will only be revealed later in the movie.

According to insidemovie.ew.com, Gerry is a struggling gambler who has enormous debts and no one will loan him money anymore. His life might be in danger, giving a dramatic tone to the whole story. The two characters team up and hit the road, heading for New Orleans, with stops in St. Louis, Memphis and Mississippi, trying to get the best out of the casino tables as well as their journey.

It will certainly be interesting to see the two complete strangers going on the trip together and entering a gambling world full of professional liars, where everybody protects their own interests. The story of two men with different motivations, dreams and goals will reflect the life of Curtis, a gambling nomad who travels from town to town without knowing where he might end up, and the life of Gerry, a gambler who lost everything and must find a way out of his problems.

We shot in lived-in, down and dirty places that you don’t see too much in modern movies these days. It lives in a ’70s kind of palette." Ryan Fleck insidemovies.ew.com;

The filming of Mississippi Grind started on January 19th in Mobile, Alabama and it will also take place in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The release date is still unknown, but according to one of the producers, it might be released in theaters later this year. Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton and Alfre Woodard also star.

Despite numerous bad gambling movies, Mississippi Grind might be one of the good ones, featuring an interesting plot and a good cast, but there are no guarantees until it actually hits the big screen.
