Tuesday, March 24, saw a series of co-ordinated raids across Nonthaburi province in Central Thailand aimed at shutting down 16 illegal online gambling operations. Ten were arrested and charged with operating illegal online gambling.
16 Illegal Gambling Operations Closed Down - Or Were They?
Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas told the media that his team first targetted a property in a housing estate on Talingchan-Suphan Buri road in Tambon Khu Wiang of Bang Kruay and discovered it was being used by the website www.bxslots.com.Five people were found dealing with customers and handling financial transactions and were placed under arrest and questioned.
Police then learned that there were another 15 properties operating more websites in the same network spread out in separate condominiums in the Muang Thong Thani, Pak Kret district.
Police quickly formed smaller teams and hit the other locations, arresting a further five people. In total five men and five women were arrested and charged.
An approximate total of 200,000 baht’s worth of computer equipment and security cameras were confiscated.
Operation Still Up and Running - But by Who?
The Kingdom of Thailand takes a harsh stance on gambling with all forms banned except the national lottery. However, this hasn’t stopped a large number of illegal operations from servicing Thai customers.Last month we learned that the website www.bxslots.com was raided and supposedly closed down, but this is not the full truth. In fact, the operation is still fully functional and accepting new customers today.
So, how can this be? Who is running the website now?
These are questions that have an obvious answer in Thailand. Only the police who impounded all of the website equipment can tell us, but the operation is still there for all to see.
