Winners of multiple gold bracelets were among the top finishers of Event #9 at the 2018 WSOP, the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship, with Paul Volpe topping the field to win his third WSOP title and $417K in prize money.
The Pennsylvania native had to overcome the skill and experience of three-time WSOP champ Eli Elezra, four-time bracelet winner Robert Mizrachi, and Viacheslav Zhukov, who was also gunning for his third title under the glare of the WSOP spotlight. It was Volpe, however, who took most of that spotlight, humbly telling WSOP reporters that a run of good cards made the difference.
"I think a lot of people with the same cards as me would have won the tournament," said the new champ.
Elezra had the lead when the final day of action got underway, the top six players heading back to the table for an unscheduled Day 4. Short-stacked Dustin Dirksen hit the rail first, the quest for his first bracelet aborted, with Russian Viacheslav Zhukov following not long thereafter.
The final four players, all Americans, each held the status of chipleader at one time or another. That included Kyle Miaso (4th) and Adam Coats (3rd), the latter forced to collect third place prize money of $181,374 despite getting it in good with A-A-K-Q without a low hand in sight after the flop of J-10-10.
Elezra and Volpe commenced heads-up play, the eventual winner holding a chip advantage that he never relinquished. Along with his third bracelet, the victory marked Volpe's third cash of this summer's WSOP.
Landing in third place in the $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty (Event #2) and 15th place in the $100,000 High Roller (Event #5) added a combined $324,000 and change to Volpe's bankroll. Toss in the $417K and gold bracelet from Event #9 and that makes an amazing week for the 37-year-old.
