In an interview that Phil Hellmuth, the self-proclaimed 'GOAT (Greatest of all time), in poker tournaments', gave to CBS Sports shortly after they took over ESPN, he has conceived the concept of 'Counter-Punching.'

While this might seem like a new term that the Poker Brat has thought up of himself, it is essentially what many online regulars have been doing for a good few years now. They effectively exploit their opponents' tendencies to 'counter' their strategy and deviate from 'Game Theory' to produce better results.

What was actually said?

Phil gave the following descriđptions when asked to define what the difference between the two coined phrases was;
White Magic relied on the ability to read his opponents and make hero calls/folds.

Counter-Punching is 'Looking for flaws and exploiting them. For example, if someone is playing too loose versus me, I will look for a moment to call them or bluff them.'

Is this a new/original concept that Phil has come up with? No.

Hellmuth has had a habit throughout his whole career of trying to generate catchy one-liners that he could then proceed to tell everybody at every table of every tournament he is in. 'I can dodge bullets, baby' and 'If there weren't luck involved, I'd win every time' are his two most famous ones.

What does this mean for Live Poker / new players?

This would be one of the few times that he has tried to completely 'reinvent' a pretty standard and commonly used tactic from the online realm of poker. Is this a sign that the latest cutting-edge strategies online take a few years to trickle down to the live poker scene? Or is it something he has always done and has decided now is the time to start phrasing it this way? Only time will tell.

Phil Hellmuth's WSOP record isn't in doubt, but what he is excellent at is keeping his name in the public eye. From a recreational/new players' perspective, I would imagine watching Phil play in some of the higher stake live tournaments and busting out these quippy one-liners will only get more people interested in playing, which is a terrific thing for poker as a whole.
