Great friendships are sometimes made at the poker tables and that was the case when Phil Ivey met Mel and Patsy Humphreys while playing Limit Hold'em for low stakes in Atlantic City before he became a poker superstar.

Although the Humphreys were at least a generation older than Ivey - he was a teenager at the time - love of poker was the bond that solidified their friendship. That friendship has been on display for all the world to see during summertime WSOP action as the Humphreys cheered Phil on from the rail as he was collecting gold bracelets through the years.

That rail will have a huge void in 2019 as Patsy Humphreys lost a battle with COPD and pneumonia, passing away on March 3 at the age of 83.

Mel and Patsy were married for more than 50 years. Her obituary mentions a love of traveling that included a visit to all 50 states as well as 19 different countries.

The obit also makes note of the fact that Patsy "became an excellent poker player."

The Humphreys typically wore shirts and held up signs as railbirds in support of Ivey. It was a touching display of friendship and fandom that will likely be missed by Phil and many others in 2019 and beyond.
