T he Pokerstars World Championship of Online Poker is well underway and it has been a fantastic two weeks for players and fans alike. 33 events have already fired off with millions of dollars in prize money being handed out on a near daily basis. Notable winners so far include Matt ‘plattsburgh’ Vengrin (second WCOOP title in consecutive years), ‘Ti0373’ (third WCOOP title), Mike ‘goleafsgoeh’ Leah, and Patrick ‘pads1161’ Leonard.

The best, however, is yet to come. The lineup for the next two weeks covers millions more in prizes including the phenomenal $10,000,000 main event with a guaranteed $1.5M first place prize. Before that, though, we will get to enjoy a few other enticing tables with 7 digit prizes, and one very special betting opportunity for all of us fans at home. For one event only, Pokerstars will be hosting a betting pool so that spectators can gamble on who will win the $51,000Super High Roller event!

That’s right, for the first time ever, you can bet on who is going to place first at the table. If you are interested in checking out the market, you can find it here. Fans will be betting on WCOOP Event 47. The event is No Limit Hold’em [8-max, Super High-Roller] and will begin on September 20th at 12:30 ET. Betting will stay open until that time and will open again after the first day of play, albeit with some changes in the odds for new bets.

The $51,000 High-Roller event is going to be a special first on a few counts. Not only is this the first time we can bet on who will win, it’s also the highest buy-in that has ever been proposed for an online poker tournament. Because of this, it promises to be one of the most competitive online poker tournaments of all time. Stephen Fisk, Managing Director of Sports Betting at PokerStars, said:

“We’re excited to offer customers the opportunity to bet on online poker tournaments for the first time and the WCOOP $51,000 Super High Roller event is the perfect place to start. It’s already the most talked about online tournament of the year, and with the added spice that having a bet on it brings, fans and players from around the world can rail their favourite player and win money even if they don’t have a spare $51k lying around.”

The odds are up and a number of favorites are already sitting comfy. Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu, Jason Mercier, and Chris ‘Moorman1’ Moorman are currently sitting in the top spots, each with odds 13:1 of winning. Funnily enough, two of them are Team PokerStars Pros.

I, for one, think this new addition to online poker is going to be a runaway hit. Fans of every sport developed favorite players and everyone already has an opinion of who they think will win. This secondary market offers an interactive element that we have never had before, not to mention the chance to put one’s money where their mouth is.

Moreover, every other sport has this kind of betting option, it’s a wonder that we didn’t start this sooner.
