'ROFLshove' Wins PokerStars SCOOP $1,050 Main Event Mid for $787K
6 years ago24 May
There was a Hollywood flavor at the final table of the 2017 PokerStars SCOOP mid-level Main Event as two of the combatants donned avatars familiar to moviegoers around the world - Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick.
Both of those actors have been making people laugh for decades, Broderick for the classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Carrey for, well, just about every movie he's ever appeared in.
The funnymen avatars may have kept the mood somewhat light for other players, but there was nothing funny about the prize money at stake. Entries totaling 5,033 created a $5,033,000 prize pool, with the top 720 finishers set to collect some of that cash.
Rolling on the Floor Laughing
The Jim Carrey avatar belonged to 'ROFLshove' from Australia, who had a huge lead at the final table with five players remaining, sitting on almost half the chips in play. A possible deal was suggested by one player, but the Australian typed in the chat box, "I wanna play, dude," according to PokerStars Blog.
Two more players hit the rail and again the topic of deal-making was mentioned. 'Léo82' from Brazil, who was sporting the Matthew Broderick avatar, and an Austrian with the moniker 'BrightStripe,' could not find harmony with 'ROFLshove,' who still held the lead and was confident in his abilities.
"I'm gonna be straight up," stated the Jim Carrey fan, insistent on getting a bigger piece of the pie. "I just feel like I am gonna win. I want more, or play."
So play they did, with 'Léo82' eventually eliminating 'BrightStripe' with two pair on the flop, grabbing the Austrian's chips. The Brazilian was still down roughly 2-1 in chips to 'ROFLshove' as the two entered heads-up play.
The Cable Guy Revisited
Here they were, the Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick avatars, dueling each other for the Main Event mid-level title of the 2017 Spring Championship of Online Poker. Ironically, both of those actors starred together in the 1996 film The Cable Guy, and both were nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight in that movie.
Yet again a deal could not be agreed upon, with 'Léo82' saying "no way" to his opponent's offer, and commenced to take the chip lead when his pocket tens held up against the pocket eights of 'ROFLshove.' An hour later and the Ferris Bueller avatar had a 3-1 lead in chips.
However, that lead was lost when pocket sixes succumbed to a flip against little slick. 'ROFLshove,' with his grimacing Jim Carrey avatar, was again in control and wouldn't lose this battle.
The Australian claimed victory when his ace-rag held up against king-high, scooping the SCOOP title and and $787,312.19 in prize money. Congrats on a well-played game.
