The first of four US Poker Open $25K High Rollers has gone the way of Englishman Stephen Chidwick, the $374,000 first prize launching him to the top of the leaderboard in the race for the trophy which awaits the overall biggest casher of the series – with Daniel Negreanu’s 3rd place finish keeping him well in the hunt.

The 44 entries produced a prizepool of $1,100,000 of whom the final seven would be paid, Chidwick already having cashed for $54,400 in the opening $10K event of the series at the Aria in Vegas, a sum almost equal to the min cash in the bigger event -with Nick Shulman grabbing that payday as he busted out in 7th to leave us with our final table of six for day 2.

Negreanu, of course, was the man many were pinning their hopes on…to bust out early that is! The Canadian PokerStars legend had made more than a few $50K sidebets that he would end the series as the big boy at the top of the moneylist and he had SuperBowl Sunday off to prepare for the final table.

With three big names; Negreanu, Chidwick and Jake Schindler, and 3 very decent players in Davies, Hanks and Tilston, it took quite a while before the cards could separate them, Davies finally falling in 6th after a race with Tilston and then Hanks followed him to the rail after Chidwick turned a boat, with Schindler crashing out in 4th after bluffing off most of his stack.

Down to three now, and Negreanu’s hopes of victory were dashed by Tilston, the Canadian needing a double-up as his stack dwindled but the Texan – ahead pre-flop – also snagged an ace to dash ‘Dnegs’ dreams, although he was soon back in the action and doing well in the Mixed Game Championship…

…a few hours later sharing some good news in his US Poker Open overall title bid…

Back at the heads-up battle for the $25K No Limit, and it took a while for Chidwick to add to his $10million lifetime earnings, the second ‘most winningest’ Englishman in history at risk at least once against Tilston, but finally prevailing in a tough battle to walk off with the $374,000 top prize and an early lead in the overall standings.

He told reporters afterwards:

"I'm feeling really good right now. I would love to win the trophy, even though it might be awkward to pack."
