Irish eyes were smiling on China’s Weijie Jervi Zheng today as he took down the partypoker -sponsored Irish Poker Open title and €300,000 in Dublin today, bringing to a close what has to have been the best-natured event in the entire poker world…

With bustouts being met with smiles and a seat at the bar as players departed from the record-breaking field of 1807 entries, today brought the final nine back to decide the destination of the 2019 trophy and the biggest part of the guarantee-smashing €1,805,870 prizepool.

Several Irishmen were in the mix, as well as some neighbouring Brits and the Galway-resident Zheng, and the banter matched the rest of the week, fine humour peppering the deep end of the lucrative tournament.

Steven Alper’s departure in 9th spot for €21,000 gave us the official final table, but the biggest early surprise was second in chips at the start of play, Max Silver, falling in 7th spot to Zheng after losing a big pot to Dave Masters.

Indeed Masters was the recipient of some serious good luck at times, but his aggressive play paid off as he found himself heads-up with Zheng for the biggest prize in Irish poker.

An almost immediate race decided the duo’s fate, however, and it went Zheng’s way as his KJ outflopped the pocket 6’s held by Masters, the latter’s excellent tournament run worth €190,000.
