This weekend sees the start of the hugely popular WinStar River Poker Series, offering a whopping $1m first prize! The $2500 buy-in Main Event kicks off on September 4th at the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma, and has a $2.5m guaranteed prize-pool.
The 2014 event attracted over 1300 players, including the likes of TJ Cloutier, Layne Flack and Maria Ho. Californian-resident Ho, who has over $1.7m live earnings to her name, is an ambassador for WinStar and lifted the River Poker Series $5k NLHE No Juice title back in 2013 for $100k. “Each and every year is bigger and better than the last!” explained Ho, who will be playing for the 6th year running.
Last year’s winner, however, was Jason Helder, whose $1m win was the biggest of his career by far. His cry of ‘Freedom’ when the final hand went his way shows just how much such a victory means to the average poker pro – an instant millionaire, the break-through win allowed Helder to go on to play – and lift another title – at the $5k WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas last December.
With three starting flights, 25000 in chips and 1-hour levels on days 2 and 3, the River Poker Series Oklahoma event has become a firm favourite on the calendar for many. With the September 8th final table seeing a guaranteed new millionaire being crowned, it’s not difficult to see why.
