Midway through this year’s WSOP, we’ve published an article with numbers and interesting facts for the first half time. With the end of registration for the Main Event, the only real mystery is who will claim the first prize of $10,000,000, but since we will have to wait until November to find that out, this is a good time to make the full time recap.
Numbers and Stats
With 64 events finished, and the Event #65 – the Main Event well underway, this is how the numbers for the tournaments look like, with exclusion of Event #1 - $500 Casino Employees.
Total number of entries for World Series of Poker climbed to 82,360, gathering people from 107 different countries and creating total prize pool of $225,584,000. With this, a new record has been set regarding the number of participants in the Series.
This wasn’t the only record that was broken. We’ve already mentioned the Millionaire Maker Event in the first part of the recap, but Event #51, the Monster Stack, became the biggest single-day no reentry event, attracting total of 7,862 unique players. It is also the third largest tournament ever held and second largest in terms of unique entries. Winner, Hugo Pingray, took home astounding $1,327,000!
The largest first place prize was paid to the winner of the Big One for One Drop, Daniel Colman, who took home $15.3 million for his victory.
However, in terms of the prize pool alone, Main Event takes an easy victory over the rest, as the total that will be distributed amongst players amounted to $62,820,200. It was also the first time since 2010 that the Main Event saw an increase in number of participants in relation to the last year. And for another record, Day 1C was the biggest starting day in the history of Main Event.
The Series raised total of $5,260,700 for the One Drop Foundation, an organization founded by Guy Laliberte that strives to provide access to clean water for everyone.
Facts and Trivia
With the Main Event still to be concluded, two players were able to claim two bracelets this summer. Apart from Dominik Nitsche, another German, George Danzer, captured his number two for the Series.
Phil Ivey claimed his 10th bracelet after winning a $1,500 Eight-Game Mix Event, locking up the bracelet bet him and Negreanu had going against anyone who was willing to take them on.
Although Negreanu did not get any bracelets this summer, he recorded two second place finishes, one being in the Big One for One Drop, which netted him nearly $8.3 million and with that score, he climbed to the top of All Time Money List.
Daniel Colman, winner of the Big One, refused to give an interview after his victory and created quite a discussion about poker players as ambassadors for the game.
Brandon Shack-Harris is currently in the lead for the Player of the Year title, followed by George Danzer. Both have been eliminated from the Main Event, opening up a possibility for one of the contenders to take over.
