Andy Frankenberger

Quitting the trading job to begin playing live tournaments full-time in 2010, the Massachusetts-born poker pro had an astonishing welcome to his first year in the game.

Formerly working as an equity derivatives trader, Andy Frankenberger had the necessary prerequisite to become a successful poker player – being comfortable managing risk. Quitting the trading job to begin playing live tournaments full-time in 2010, the Massachusetts-born poker pro had an astonishing welcome to his first year in the game. Andy won the World Poker Tour Player of the Year following a series of big cashes on the 2010 WPT circuit. What was so impressive about Frankenberger's achievement was that he had little prior experience in competitive poker before winning this award. He did play in the 2008 WSOP Main Event after winning a satellite through his Wall Street firm, but did not make the cash.

In this epic first year, his live tournament earnings exceeded $1,000,000 across nine different cashes. His first huge score was a non-WPT event – the $2,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event at the 2010 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza – winning $162,110 for the achievement. In his next tournament cash, he won his first WPT title and scooped a huge score of $750,000 in the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event in the 2010 Legends of Poker series. Before the year closed out, Frankenberger made one more six-figure cash in a WPT event, this time in the $10,000 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event in Las Vegas. Finishing in 5th for $161,200, Andy proved that he was able to hang with pros more experienced than him as he beat the likes of Mark Newhouse, Annette Obrestad and Thomas Marchese to earn his place.

Over the following two years, Frankenberger won back-to-back WSOP bracelets which showed any doubters that he was not just experiencing a lengthy bout of beginner's luck. The first came in 2011 when he triumphed over 2,499 other players in the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em event and took home $599,153 for the victory. At the following World Series, he won the $10,000 Pot Limit Hold'em event – having a bracelet for each wrist less than three years into his professional poker career. Also winning the PartyPoker Premier League $25,000 Mixed Game Championships in 2011 along with another WSOP final table in 2017, Frankenberger made more than $3,100,000 in live tournament earnings between 2010 and 2017.

In an interview with Business Insider, Frankenberger has attributed a large portion of his success to his background in trading: 'It's all about risk management. If the market goes against you and you're wrong, you get out. A lot of poker players don't know how to do that because it looks weak. I can fold a hand that makes me look weak. I don't care about my image'.
