There are but a few top poker players representing Bulgaria on the international poker scene. Dimitar Danchev is one of the select few, and he has been doing it quite well so far. Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1985, he got into poker during his early 20s, dabbling with cash games and finally becoming a full time pro some two years later. The cash games remained his favorite form of poker throughout his career, but he did manage to get a couple of decent scores in live tournaments as well. His first significant result came during 2011, when he fell just short of finishing the job in EPT San Remo, ending in 2nd place and taking home close to $830,000. In the 2013 he got the biggest score of his career, winning the PCA Main Event in the field of nearly thousand players for $1,859,000. It was an important result not only in terms of money but also because it was the first big poker title to travel to Bulgaria. Danchev was very proud of this accomplishment, mentioning how poker was becoming big in his home country and that there are many great Bulgarian players. He said he really felt the support that was coming from his fans and that this victory was for all of them and a step in development of poker in Bulgaria towards reaching a truly top level. In an interview after his PCA win, emotions were showing clearly on the face of the Bulgarian pro, as he explained how the final table was very tough and that it wasn’t easy to maintain his composure and finish triumphant, taking home not only the money, but also the “kupata” (Bulgarian word for trophy). Another achievement worth mentioning is his 4th place finish in the Pot Limit Hold’em event during the 2013 WSOP, banking nearly $78,000 and showing once again that he will be amongst the players to watch out for in the coming period. His winnings to date are in excess of $3.1 million, which naturally puts him in the top spot of the Bulgarian All Time Money List. Proud owner of one EPT title, Danchev will certainly look to add some of the WPT titles and WSOP bracelets to his name, so we can certainly expect to see much more from him and probably other members of the growing Bulgarian school of poker.
