Born in 1968, Canadian poker pro Gavin Smith is one of the most entertaining figures in the game today. Since turning pro in 1998, he has put together over 120 live tournament cashes for a total which exceeds $6,320,000. His biggest score was in 2005 when the Ontario-born tournament crusher shipped the $10,000 WPT No Limit Hold’em Championship event in Las Vegas for a whopping $1,128,278.
2005 actually marked Smith’s breakout year as he bagged more than $2,000,000 in live tournament earnings. To go with his seven-figure score, he also caught two six-figure ones. The first of these came in the $2,000 WPT No Limit Hold’em Event in Las Vegas where Gavin won the tournament, earning himself $155,880 and a WPT title to boot. Before the year closed out, he final-tabled the $10,000 2nd Annual Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship for $327,610. Although he fell short of a second seven-figure payday after finishing in third, he finished the year with two WPT titles and was one of the biggest winners in the live tournament scene for that year.
He also had an impressive run on Poker After Dark, winning three different events between 2008 and 2009 for a total of $360,000. In the most memorable of these appearances, Gavin beat poker legend Phil Ivey in a heads-up battle whilst clearly inebriated on Season 3’s ‘19th Hole’ episode.
In 2010, Gavin earned himself a WSOP bracelet in the $2,500 Limit/No Limit Hold’em Mix event and claimed a six-figure score for doing so. He now has over 37 cashes at WSOP events in a variety of formats, with no less than five final table finishes in mixed-game events.
Away from the table, Gavin has been a part of some of the more notorious prop bets in the poker world. One of these included fellow pros Jeff Madsen and Joe Sebok, where the latter had to get the faces of Smith and Madsen tattooed on himself for busting first out of the three in the $10,000 L. A. Poker Classic in 2010. A tamer prop bet that he also emerged victorious in involved Phil Laak and a bag of marshmallows. To win Laak’s money which he put up, Smith had to stuff fifteen marshmallows into his mouth in 150 seconds and manage to close his lips once they were inside his mouth. After some strategic flattening, Smith came out the victor (you can view the spectacle here).
