Greg Ronaldson was born in South Africa in 1984, matriculated from the Roman Catholic private school St David’s Marist Inanda in 2001 and went on to study Commerce at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree and in 2006 he turned poker pro.
His first significant cash came shortly afterwards in 2007 when he took down the All Africa Tournament, Swaziland for ZAR1,150,000 (about US$174,000 at the time). From then on, his Hendon mob page shows a series of solid and professional runs in a number of US and South African tournaments through to pretty much the end of 2016 when he goes quiet for a bit.
His LinkedIn states that his years as a poker player came to a close in 2009 but he’s continued to play as a hobbyist since then, and done extremely well for a hobbyist.
His big breakout year came in 2012, when the World Series Of Poker Circuit came to his home turf in South Africa hot on the tail of him taking down first place in the Aussie Millions AU$5,300 Head-Up Championship for AU$80,000. He had to beat Sorel Mizzi in the final round of that tournament.
With full pockets he headed back home to join the WSOPC when it came to Vanderbijlpark. The US$350 No Limit Hold’em event at the WSOPC in 2012, attracted 324 players. At the time this was the largest poker field to ever play on the African continent. Ronaldson beat that record breaking field, taking down first and another US$22,842.
His wins gave him important final table practice for the WSOPC US$3,300 where he took 5th, going on to fill out the rest of the year with three other top 20 places including a 14th in the WPT Johannesburg.
Not one to break his roll, he followed this up at the next WPT Johannesburg in 2013 where he took 4th and 2nd respectively in the Main Event and High Roller.
Despite currently working at Kaon Capital, having made the natural transition from poker to trading, continued to play regularly from 2013 through to 2016 Ronaldson. During this time he appeared deep in the fields of various South African events with the odd holiday to Vegas for the World Series thrown in.
At the time of writing he remains the 6th largest tournament winner in South Africa with lifetime winnings to the tune of $755, 023. We can expect plenty more profit in the future from this trader.
