Coming from Albuquerque, USA, Joe (Joseph) Serock has made quite a fuss in the community with his recent poker results. Born in 1988, the young gun came in his first contact with poker through freeroll tournaments. He started in 2004, after watching the televised WSOP coverage from the previous year. Although he learned poker by playing freerolls, his first serious steps came about after a year or so, when his brother got lucky in an online tournament, winning $10k for his $10 entry, and letting him play $10/20 NLH with that money. He says that he was quite depressed during his high school years and discovering poker was a true revelation for him. He spent all of his time playing, reading books and hanging around different poker forums trying to get better. When he finally got some real money from his brother, the mix of his newly acquired knowledge and some run good have enabled him to build up a roll to about $20k. During this period he has also started playing satellites to the WSOPE events because he had great drive to play live, especially since he perceived the tournaments in Europe as super soft. Known online by his aliases “floes” and “planetearf”, Pocketfives lists his online winnings as being over $1.8 million at the time of writing this article. His biggest online score came about in 2010, when he won the Sunday Brawl tournament on Full Tilt, beating nearly 2,600 players and banking $105k. Even though these numbers are quite an accomplishment, his live results are even more impressive. He fully transitioned to live play after the Black Friday hit in 2011 and he has managed to amass more than $2.3 million in live cashes. One of his greatest live achievements to date is certainly his WPT Player of the Year title that he won in 2012, for the Season X of the WPT. It was one of the most dramatic and closest races in the history of the POY, but stars aligned right and Serock walked away with the title. His biggest scores include 2nd place in the 2009 WSOP $2,5k Event worth more than $340,000 as well as two 3rd place finishes in WPT events during 2012 for combined amount slightly over $625,000. But in an interview after his very successful 2012, he said he did not feel like he was getting better in poker anymore, as he stopped trying to improve and he felt like recently he has been just routinely showing up to play. Tony Dunst, in one his articles, describes Serock as “curiously eccentric” person with little regard for what other people think about him. He often travels to tournaments without booking a hotel room and he has been known to spend multiple months without a permanent address. The man himself says that, apart from poker, he enjoys skateboarding, watching TV, listening to music and in general doing whatever his friends are doing.
