Inspired after seeing fellow Dain Gus Hansen have success in the world of tournament poker, Mickey ‘Mement_mori’ Petersen took to the game in his teens and began playing online. He, like such other poker professionals as Anthony Gregg and David Walliams, played Magic: The Gathering at a high-level in his younger days. After considering the minimal expenses of playing online poker and the earning potential it offered, he became motivated to give it a shot and his opening year proved successful enough to justify never turning back.
Online multi-table tournaments (MTTs) are his bread and butter, and Mickey is able to maintain an impressive win-rate playing a high number of tables (from 16 to 25 on average). With his online results documented since 2007, Petersen has won over $4,000,000 in nine years on PokerStars alone. Until April of 2017, he was a sponsored Team PokerStars Pro and this made him widely known in the poker community.
His breakout year came in 2008, where he made $1,927,657 on PokerStars playing MTTs – only one year since his professional poker career began. Over the following two years, he finished in the top 0.01% players in the Official Poker Rankings, demonstrating his continued commitment to the game.
Petersen’s tournament successes are not limited to the online arena – he has over $1,300,000 to his name in live tournament winnings. The biggest of these was when he fittingly won the EPT Denmark 35,000 DKr Main Event for $444,595. In a defining moment for him, Petersen’s life had become what he had dreamed it to be when watching Gus Hansen win a WPT event just a few years back. He thanks live poker for enabling him to travel to a broad range of countries, from around Europe, to the Bahamas and beyond.
Mickey found love through poker, meeting his now long-term partner and getting the opportunity to enjoy travelling with her thanks to the game. If you want to see an insight into the life of a committed MTT grinder, check out this short on him here.
