The life story of this young poker phenom has been the one of ups and downs, although his professional career has mostly been trending upwards. From the guy who was, in his own words, thrilled to have been able to save $200 in 2001 to being ranked number one tournament player by Pocketfives.com in 2007, Sorel Mizzi has certainly traveled a long way in quite a short period of time. Born in 1986 in Toronto, Canada, he got introduced to poker during his teens playing home games with his friends. After 2003 and Moneymaker’s win he started his online career under the alias “Imper1um”. Natural talent, it did not take long before he started achieving some very notable results, like the first place in the Poker Stars’ Sunday Warm-Up for $80,000 as well as two FTOPS wins for over $130,000 combined. He is one of the few players whose online tournament winnings exceed $1 million. Impressive as these results are, his name will probably always be connected to the cheating incident that he was involved in. In December of 2007, he had bought and taken the control over the Full Tilt account from one his friends deep in the tournament. Mizzi went on to win the event, but later investigation revealed the irregularity and as the result not only the money was confiscated but they were both banned from playing on the site as well. He came under a lot of fire from the poker community for this, and even though he had since made a detailed blog post in which he explained and apologized for his actions, the poker world remains divided on the issue and there are many who simply cannot get over what he has done. The incident did not prevent Sorel from continuing to crush the tournaments and his live results are very impressive as well. One of the most important results during the early days of his live career is certainly a runner-up finish in the 2008 WSOPE Omaha event which banked him $240,000, followed by the same result in 2009 WSOP in $5,000 Omaha tournament for over $250,000. His biggest score to date came in 2013 Asia Millions held in Macau, where he secured the first place and a prize of nearly $2.1 million. His overall live winnings are in excess of $9 million, combined with $1.3 million in online winnings. These results put him on 27th place of the All Time Money List at the time of writing this article. His undeniable talent and passion for the game have unfortunately been overshadowed by events of the 2007 scandal that might never go away. Is it a suiting punishment for the proverbial crime is not for us to say and, as always, time will run its course and chips will fall where they have to.
