Rupert Elder is an English professional poker player known on PokerStars as ElRupert.

Rupert Elder was born in Bury St Edmunds, England and attended the University of Warwick. He began playing poker as a teenager, but had never planned to pursue it as a career. He was more interested in becoming a stock trader, or even a computer programmer. He struggled to complete his courses, however, since more and more of his time was dedicated to playing poker, rather than studying. While still attending college, he earned a total of $500k, which he credits with helping him make the decision.

After earning a degree in Economics, he decided that poker would be a better career path than as an economist, and began playing professionally online. He says this was a decision that didn’t immediately cause any conflict with his parents, although he still suspects that his dad would prefer him having a real job.

In the online realm, he has earned a total of $1.9 million in tournament cashes, in addition to being a formidable opponent on cash tables. Only one year after going pro, he took second place in the Full Tilt Poker Million-Dollar Guarantee for his first six figure cash of $142,846. He took fifth in PokerStars’ own version of that tournament in 2012, earning $59k. Those two tournaments included, he has an incredible 1,600 cashes online, making him a consistent player on the virtual felt. As of October 2015, he is ranked 6th on the United Kingdom money list, according to PocketFives.

He has been equally successful in live play as well, earning another $1.9 million at the WSOP, WPT, and EPT. His first live cash was back in 2006, when he came in 82nd at PCA, taking $10,700, but since then he has earned much larger numbers. In fact, in just his first five years of live play, he managed to cash 13 times, play on four final tables, and win the majority of his lifetime earnings. During those five years, he finished fourth in the $2,500 NLHE event at the Emperor Series in Macau, along with cashing in five more tournaments in 2011 alone.

As of 2015, his largest cash has been at EPT San Remo in 2011, where he took home an incredible $1.2 million, making up most of his live tournament winnings. With seven in the money finishes at WSOP and five on the EPT, he is certainly just as feared in person as he is online.

Elder currently lives in London, where he continues to play online and on the European Poker Tour. He has been largely inactive in the past two years, although he has said in various interviews that he will be making a full return at some point. He credits the stress of playing long days with convincing him that he should take an extended break from live play. Despite that, he has consistently raked in new cashes online, including playing on WPT, PokerStars, and Black Chip Poker. When his live return will come remains to be seen.
