Full Tilt Poker on Steam Games?

The last couple of days has seen a buzz of excitement among the poker-playing masses who spend their time on ‘Steam’, the digital distribution PC Gaming community. FullTiltPoker.net, the play money version of the industry giants, are offering up their client to an estimated 125 million+ Steam users.

“Vote FullTiltPoker.net onto Steam!”

Reads the poker site’s appeal to the masses who converge on Steam for their gaming needs, continuing

“Experience the very best in online gaming for free.”

It’s not difficult to see why Full Tilt want to promote their poker client on the popular platform – the number of potential ‘real-money’ new members drawn into the world of online poker could be huge – and Steam currently has a very limited poker offering available.

“This would be a big PLUS for Steam !!” was NeVeR_Eire’s view on the Steam discussion thread. “If you have ever played on Full Tilt you would know that there software is much better than any other Play Money poker site like Zynga.”

Not a view shared by all commenters, jmjovan59 opining “Why would I be playing this with so many other and better games like Zynga Poker for an example?”

Internet discussions often serve no real purpose as we all know – descending into love it or hate it affairs – but on Steam things work a bit differently. They operate a ‘Greenlight’ system, whereby the community decides which software will be released on the platform.

Discussions - followed by voting yay or nay - are the norm, and Full Tilt will be looking to persuade the Steam following of the merits of adding their poker site to the myriad other games available for download.

'Prepare to join eighty thousand others who play each week at our free-to-play No Limit Hold’em poker tables, or even discover your next favorite pastime among our wide variety of game types'
Is their hype, and as Max Silver explains passionately on the FT blog just why he thinks a ‘yes’ vote would be a wise move.

“(Twitch) streamers like Jason “JCarver” Somerville, Jaime Staples and yes, occasionally myself (with about 1% of the success as the aforementioned Twitch bosses) attract thousands of viewers completely new to poker and do a wonderful job of growing the game”, he begins, adding, “I’d argue that getting a poker client onto Steam will do the exact same thing.”

Describing himself as a poker player first and foremost, he also has a rich history in gaming from playing Sonic on Sega Mega Drive, Goldeneye on N64, and Counter-Strike for the computer - games have always been a huge part of his life.

Explaining “the long and intertwined history” between the two disciplines, Silver talks about how Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospelier (right), Randy ‘nanoko’ Lew and others crossed over from gaming to poker, concluding,

“Other poker sites will be watching this move closely and I’d bet a significant amount of money that if Full Tilt successfully makes it through the Greenlight process others will follow…directly leading to bigger prizes and a bigger metaphorical slice of the pie for everyone.”

Full Tilt aren’t exactly shy about their desire to appear on Steam’s downloadable listings.

“As one of the world’s leading online poker rooms, we’re proud to offer a truly authentic gaming experience. Enjoy the ultimate in high-speed poker at a Rush Poker table or take on just two opponents in our Jackpot Sit & Go Tournaments.”

Whether this comes to fruition or not remains to be seen – and in the hands of the ‘Steam faithful’ – and if you want to join in the voting process, signing up ‘is free and easy‘. Simply head over to the steam store and once you have created an account or if you already have one, go to Full Tilt Greenlight and cast your vote.
