Trio Involved in the Murder of Mehmet Hassan Faces Justice6 years ago
The trio that killed poker player Mehmet Hassanhas been sentenced by Judge William Kennedy. Leonie Granger, Kyrron Jackson and Nicholas Chandler have received stiff sentences due to the brutal nature of their crimes.
Leonie Granger, who lured Hassan into death, has been sentenced for 16 years in prison after she was found guilty of manslaughter a week ago. During the trial at the Old Bailey Court, Leonie admitted that she was only involved in a plan to rob Hassan, denying participation in the brutal murder.
In mitigation, Orlando Pownall QC has said that Granger had got involved in murder plot only because of her boyfriend Kyrron Jackson. He stated that she fell in love with his desires and that she now deeply regrets what had happened.
However Judge William Kennedy said that Granger, who had worked with elderly since she was 18, lost her sense of compassion when she got involved in the murder scheme.
Her Boyfriend Kyrron Jackson and his friend Nicholas Chandler, who had beaten Mehmet to death, have been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 36 years. While sentencing, Judge Kennedy described the attack as an act of extreme brutality.
After they were sentenced, Kennedy called for the trio to be taken to the prison immediately.
Leonie Granger was only interested in Hassan’s money and he was brutally murdered only because of his winnings that he kept around his flat. He sometimes won as much as £15,000 at a time and he really enjoyed the company of women which made him vulnerable to the unscrupulous people like Leonie.
Leonie had previous convictions for drunk driving and for fleeing from a taxi without paying. Her boyfriend Kyrron was well known to the police and was previously convicted for his involvement in the London riots and for growing cannabis.
On the night of the murder, Leonie made her excuses and left Hassan’s Islington flat. Police believes that she left the door unlocked and helped Nicholas and Kyrron to get inside. They tied up Hassan and kicked him to death before they ransacked his home looking for cash.
During the trial the court saw disturbing video found on Leonie’s phone. Video showed three people celebrating Hassan’s death, laughing and holding bundles of £50 notes.
The death of Mehmet Hassan was described as culmination of ruthless greed and what has happened will haunt his family forever, said late Hassan's nephew.
