Global Poker Index CEO Alex Dreyfus’ vision of sportifying poker took another step forward following the announcement of a partnership with USA TODAY that will see the publication post poker-related content pertaining to the GPI in print as well as online.

The GPI is the ranking authority for players competing in live poker tournaments. But it's much more than that as Dreyfus has bold new plans for the coming year that include the Global Poker League (GPL), scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2016. A dozen teams will be fielded initially, with franchises expected in major cities such as L.A., New York and Las Vegas.

We're extremely pleased to be announcing this multi-year content partnership with USA TODAY Sports," Dreyfus stated in a press release. "The partnership will provide an essential platform to showcase our innovative new events and to promote the players ranked in the Global Poker Index."

The new agreement, which begins in January, calls for USA TODAY Sports to bill itself as the "Official Media Partner of Global Poker League." In addition to poker event results, we can expect to see the publication provide other content such as player profiles.

The Global Poker Index has done more than any other organization to unify poker and to see the possibilities that exist for creating a 'big league' atmosphere around play," said Jason Ford, VP of Sports Marketing for the USA TODAY Sports Media Group. "We're looking forward to working together to create a 24/7 digital poker destination, and to providing coverage for some of the groundbreaking events that GPI is launching."
