Benedikt Eberle Takes Down Aussie Millions Opening Event for $315,295

The eagerly-anticipated Aussie Millions festival kicked off this week and the opening event has been won by Austrian Benedikt Eberle – his AUD$315,295 ($252,733) payday a cool US$¼million more than his previous biggest score!
The $1,150 buy-in Opening Event featured a $1million guarantee and as expected it drew a large field to begin the 26 event long festival, with a number of high roller tournaments and a Main Event with an estimated first prize of $1.6 million still to look forward to.
Among those in the mix was the world-famous cricketer Shane Warne…
…the Australian legend tweeting his joy at sharing the moment with his son, now old enough to join him at Melbourne’s Crowne Casino, long-time host to the Aussie Millions…
For Eberle it was also a momentous occasion, the Austrian’s ‘poker previous’ being a pair of paltry cashes – in October 2015 for $78 and late last year on Macau for a more useful $3,701 – yesterday’s massive windfall sure to be a life-changing experience for the young Viennese player who describes himself on Twitter as a ‘Mid/High Stakes Coinflipper’.
Despite the huge prizepool there were relatively few big names in the field, although England’s Jack Sinclair – who finished 8th in last summer’s WSOP Main Event – and almost-local hero Jonathan Karamalikis – 4th in the Aussie all-time winners list – both made it into the money, 153 spots being paid out.
The big money was at the final table, of course, and with one Austrian amid a swathe of Australians it looked likely that the title would be staying on home ground, although Eberle was rarely off the top chipstack status…
With a prestigious Anton ring at stake as well as the cash, it was Melbourne’s Michael Adamo who pushed Eberle all the way, finally bowing out in the heads-up match after a tough fight…
With two dozen events still to come, fans of the game can expect more than their share of exciting poker – the satellites to the Main Event already entering the record books…
…and PokerTube will bring you the best of the action as it unfolds.
