During a short, but very moving ceremony from couple hours ago, Chad Brown was awarded a honorary WSOP bracelet by Jack Effel for both his personal poker achievements and his contributions to the game of poker.

Chad, whose honor, integrity and good nature are respected and admired by nearly every member of the poker community he’s ever come in contact with, has been battling a long battle with the cancer. At one point things were starting to look better, before they turned for the worse, and at this point it seems that the cancer will, sadly, prevail. One of his friends, JohnBenvenuto, posted an update on his situation, explaining he is now “in an end of life facility, and though his mind wants to continue the fight the body no longer has any fight left”.

His time is very limited but his attitude is remarkable and upbeat. I hope his friends in the poker world pass along their wishes while he has time to enjoy reading them online. John Benvenuto;

The news had a strong impact on the entire community as, although Chad’s diagnosis was a bad one, he’s always managed to find ways to keep up his spirits and incredible life power. In one of his earlier blog entries, he explained that his cancer came back and that his only hope now was a new medicine that is being developed. But even faced with this fact, he was still taking it in stride, comparing cancer to poker and its swings. Unfortunately, it seems that he will not be granted enough time to wait out for this new medicine to become available.

This prompted Effel and WSOP organizers to make the decision and award Chad Brown a honorary bracelet. Visibly shaken during the speech, Jack Effel reiterated how many lives Chad has impacted in a positive way and continued saying:

It now seems a certainty that Chad will never again play in the World Series of Poker or any other tournament setting. So, today, the World Series of Poker family would like to award Chad Brown an honorary bracelet. With a third and two second place finishes on a resume, we know it’s just going to be matter of time before we were handing you this. So, Chad, buddy, keep fighting and thank you for sharing much of your precious time with us, all of us in the poker community. We miss you more than anything and we wish that you were here. Jack Effel;

The announcement was accompanied by loud round of applauses and cheering by everyone in the room, and the Twitter was full of words of praise for this move by the WSOP and support for Chad and those closest to him.

It was a very emotional moment and not something that we are used to seeing in the poker world on regular basis, but it is a nice and well deserved gesture for someone who has clearly had a great impact on many people in his orbit, as even during his toughest battles, he always had words of advice and support for those who came to visit.

And after sitting for nearly fifteen minutes, trying to find the best way to finish this article, the best I can come up is simply – good luck Chad and congratulations. Not as much for the bracelet as for never giving up and having so many people that care for you. Push comes to shove, you are still a winner!
