The Aussie Millions is in full swing in Melbourne and Denver pro Chance Kornuth is the latest big winner, taking down the $1,150 NLH – 6-Max for A$134,850 ($107,925) to add to his $5million+ lifetime earnings which includes a previous huge win at the Crowne Casino’s famous January festival.

With 598 entries and close to $½million in prizemoney up for grabs it was a truly international affair, the likes of former WSOP November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka from the Czech Republic running deep, as did 2012 Main Event runner-up Jesse Sylvia, with a large English contingent doing battle with the local Aussies – the poker ‘Ashes’ going to the Australia as usual.

If ‘Chance’ seems like a strange choice of name for a child, spare a thought for the man who bubbled the final table of the 6-max – the incredibly named Human Ghanbarinojehdeh – doubtless the butt of many a joke over the years, so I’ll refrain from adding to the list!

With the human Human hitting the rails, it was the USA who managed to get two of their men into the final table, however, with Californian Scott Sanders – a relative newcomer to the live game – bowing out first among the last six but snaring his second cash of the festival to add $17,171 to his recent biggest cash of $62,255, definitely someone to keep an eye on for the future.

Someone who has already made a name for themselves is the Slovenian Casey Kastle, his countries number 1 all-time money-winner and a man who holds the pretty cool poker record of having the most cashes in different countries, telling PokerListings a few years back:

“My goal is to be able to wear shorts and sandals 250 days a year. It took me a while to get there, but now I’m above 300 days a year.”

Australia in January is, of course, a given weather-wise but Kastle found the heat at the table a bit too much, bowing out in 4th spot, his US$31,397 his ninth cash at the Aussie Millions. He was followed soon afterwards by the last remaining ‘local hero’ in the field – a regular at the Melbourne event, though an Adelaidian himself –  Panayotis Flourentzoo, leaving Kornuth to fight it out heads-up for the title with Malaysia’s Christopher Soyza.

The battle was eventually decided by ‘lucky sevens’ and Kornuth had taken down the 6th event of the series – a $100k+ score and the much coveted ANTON ring which very winner is presented with…

With the $25k Challenge kicking off today, there will be plenty more chances for poker’s finest to snare a ring of their own, but for the time being it’s Chance’s day in the spotlight…
